The present book is the first published biography of sculptor Wiktor Tołkin. To place his works within a broader perspective of artistic phenomena, it also takes up more general issues regarding Polish sculpture, especially martyrological monumental sculpture. His monuments derive from his traumatic experiences of the wartime. It is especially evident in his two most famous monuments, in the former Nazi concentration camps at Stutthof near Gdańsk (1968) and at Majdanek on the outskirts of Lublin (1969).
